Sie verfolgt seine Romane mit der Heldin Misery Chastain geradezu fanatisch. Paul, der Misery in seinem neuesten Manuskript sterben läßt, gibt seiner Wohltäterin Annie den ungedruckten Roman aus Dankbarkeit für ihre Hilfe zu lesen. Doch dann verändert Annie ihr Verhalten gegenüber Paul: Ihre Wutausbrüche wegen Kleinigkeiten häufen sich, und Paul begreift, daß er einer Geisteskranken ausgeliefert ist. Außer sich vor Zorn über den Tod ihrer Lieblingsfigur Misery, zwingt Annie Paul für sie - und nur für sie - einen Roman zu schreiben, in dem Misery weiterlebt. Und Paul muß einsehen, daß das auch für ihn die einzige Überlebenschance bedeutet, denn Annie hat, wie er herausfindet, ein schreckliches Geheimnis...
