Der Ingenieur hat bei der Planung einer geschweißten Konstruktion die Aufgabe, die Gestalt und Festigkeit in Abhängigkeit von der Bauteilfunktion zu bestimmen. Dabei muss das Bauteil werkstoffgerecht und schweißgerecht sowie im Hinblick auf die Festigkeit der geschweißten Konstruktion und auf die schweißtechnische Fertigung gestaltet werden. Dies muss zudem unter der Beachtung von Vorschriften und Normenwerken erfolgen. Dieses Buch soll die komplexen Zusammenhänge bei der Planung von Schweißkonstruktionen verdeutlichen und erklären, unterstützt durch Übungen zur Festigkeitsberechnung und Dimensionierung von einfachen, geschweißten Bauteilen bis hin zu hochdynamisch belasteten Konstruktionen.
