Rachela Auerbach (1899-1976) war eine der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten der frühen Holocaustforschung. Im Warschauer Ghetto gehörte sie zu den Mitarbeitern des Untergrundarchivs von Emanuel Ringelblum. Nach dem Krieg begründete sie die Abteilung Zeugenberichte in Yad Vashem. Ihre Schriften, die in brillanter Sprache verfasst sind, lassen eine außergewöhnliche Beobachtungsgabe erkennen. Die hier publizierten Texte entstanden von 1941 bis 1942 im Warschauer Ghetto. Die Edition umfasst ihr Ghetto-Tagebuch und die "Monografie einer Volksküche" - ein Ort, an dem "sich alles spiegelt, was das Ghetto durchmacht".
