Neoliberalism, Media and the Political examines the condition of media and journalism in neoliberal cultures. Emphasizing neoliberalism's status as a political ideology that is simultaneously hostile to politics, the book presents a critical theoretical argument supported by empirical illustrations from post-Rogernomics New Zealand, the Leveson Inquiry in the UK, (post-)Celtic Tiger Ireland, and the climate sceptic blogosphere. As in other fields, the term 'neoliberalism' is widely cited in media, communication and journalism research to signify how mainstream media cultures have been colonized by the market. Drawing on a variety of theoretical sources, especially Laclau and Bourdieu, Phelan questions the adequacy of the standard critical narrative. Social practices are too often reduced to the category of neoliberal, inculcating a mode of critique that keeps retelling the same neoliberal story. Against the image of a monolithic neoliberalism that imposes itself on other domains, this study identifies the potential sites of a cultural politics within neoliberalized media regimes.
