This book comprises ten studies on monosyllables, viewed from different perspectives and considering data from different languages of Asia, Africa, and Europe.§Monosyllabic words can be found in almost all languages of the world. Some languages, for example Chinese, have long been famous for their strong preference of this type. Others, for example Bantu languages, are known to require that words have at least two syllables. The role of monosyllables in European languages is only beginning to attract the interest of linguists. §The authors of this book explore phonetic, phonological, morphological, and functional aspects of monosyllables. They focus both on the interplay of syllable structure and word structure and on phonological and morphological rules of well-formedness. They discuss the evolution of monosyllables in languages that prefer this type (language of East Asia, but also Danish), and the special role of mono-syllables as exceptions either within the lexicon or among word-forms in a specific domain such as imperatives. Methods used in individual studies include experimental phonetics and quantitative linguistics, in-depth analyses of single languages and large-scale typological comparison.
