Im vorliegenden Buch betrachtet der Autor ausgehend von der Einordnung der Filmmusik im Kontext filmästhetischer Mittel alle wissenschaftlich erfassten Modelle seit der sogenannten Stummfilmzeit bis zur Gegenwart. Modelle z.B. von Zofia Lissa, Hansjörg Pauli, Norbert Jürgen Schneider, Georg Maas und Claudia Bullerjahn werden zusammengefasst, beschrieben und diskutiert. Darauf aufbauend entwirft der Autor ein neueres Modell, welches alle parallel verlaufenen Funktionen in ein System integriert und damit versucht der Dynamik und Komplexität von Musik in Filmen gerecht zu werden. Verdeutlicht wird dieses neue System zur Beschreibung der Funktionen anhand einer Filmmusikanalyse, sodass der Leser selbst die Anwendbarkeit des Modells prüfen kann.
