Radikaldemokratisch, sozialliberal und antifaschistisch sind nicht unbedingt die Attribute, die einem auf Anhieb einfallen, wenn es darum geht, den Gründungsprozess der Freien Demokratischen Partei nach 1945 zu skizzieren. In einem liberalen Umfeld, in dem allein schon der Begriff "sozial" unter Sozialismusverdacht stand und in dem bereits die bloße Erinnerung an die NS-Vergangenheit zu geradezu reflexhaften Abwehrreaktionen führte, klingt dies in der Tat zunächst befremdlich.Die vorliegende Untersuchung über die FDP in Hamburg im Zeitraum zwischen 1945 und 1953 beschreibt auf der Basis intensiver Quellenrecherche in in- und ausländischen Archiven, in Privatnachlässen und mit Hilfe zahlreicher Zeitzeugenbefragungen den einzigartigen und letztlich gescheiterten Versuch der liberalen Neugründung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg als bürgerliche Linkspartei. Es war aber nicht zuletzt dieser "Hamburger Kurs", der entscheidend dazu beitrug, dass die Bundes-FDP Anfang der 50er Jahre nicht im Fahrwasser der von der Parteirechten propagierten "nationalen Sammlung" weit nach rechts abgetrieben wurde.
