Das Buch führt den Leser in die Grundlagen der COBOL-Programmierung ein. Es stellt die Erstellung von COBOL-Programmen für die dialog-orientierte Arbeit am Bildschirmarbeitsplatz dar, wobei die Erfassung von Daten, deren Speicherung in sequentielle und index-sequentielle Dateien sowie die Bildschirmanzeige dieser gespeicherten Daten hervorgehoben werden. Tabellenverarbeitung, die Sortierung von Datenbeständen und die Modularisierung werden als besondere Techniken einer komfortablen COBOL-Programmierung beschrieben. Alle in diesem Buch beschriebenen Problemlösungen werden vor der Umformung in ein COBOL-Programm zunächst als Struktprogramm entwickelt. Die Sprachelemente dieser problemorientierten Programmiersprache werden durch einfache und aufeinander aufbauende Anwendungsbeispiele begründet. Hinzu kommen Übungsaufgaben mit Lösungsteil: ein für COBOL-Einsteiger gemachtes Buch.
