Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) war weder Berufsphotograph noch Naturwissenschaftler, sondern Professor an der Kunstgewerblichen Lehranstalt in Berlin, Bildhauer und Amateurphotograph. Sein Interesse an der Welt der Pflanzen war künstlerischer und didaktischer Natur: Es ging ihm um die Struktur der Pflanzen, ihren organischen Aufbau, ihre"aus Zweckmäßigkeit"geborene"höchste künstlerische Form", die er mit Hilfe der Photographie sichtbar und vergleichbar machen wollte. Sein Ziel war es, einen systematischen Formenkatalog zu erstellen, der bildenden Künstlern, Kunsthandwerkern und vor allem Architekten als Lehr- und Musterbuch dienen sollte. Ende der 20er Jahre veröffentlichte Blossfeldt seine Aufnahmen in zwei Büchern - Urformen der Kunst und Wundergarten der Natur -, die das Kunstschaffen seiner Zeit nachhaltig beeinflußten. Sie machten ihren Autor über Nacht berühmt und gingen als Klassiker ihres Genres in die Photo- und Kunstgeschichte ein. Der Literaturwissenschaftler Gert Mattenklott schrieb den einführenden Text zu unserer 1991 erstmals erschienenen Auswahl der 44 schönsten von Blossfeldts streng sachlichen und zugleich poetischen Pflanzen-Portraits.
