This book presents the latest research on the management of human resources (HR) in Asia's post-crisis economies, and of western firms operating in Asia. Contributions from an international group of scholars and practitioners examine how human resource management is enacted in Asian countries, how it is changing in response to recent economic events, and how firms are linking indigenous and external human resource management learning. The contributors analyze the key HR-issues facing firms operating in Asia today; including culturally bound organizational behaviour and the current change in views on lifetime employment. Examples are taken from firms in Japan, China, Korea and Thailand, and these domestic approaches are then considered in the context of joint ventures. As well as providing a detailed analysis of Asian human resource management, contributors with perspectives from both the East and the West show how multinational firms can incorporate Asian thinking and acting into a modern business strategy for successful human resource development in international ventures. The countries located in the Asian region are poised for considerable growth in the future, and will continue to attract foreign investment flows and engage in Mergers and Acquisition activity. The research presented here demonstrates that firms involved in this activity will need to realize new methods of joint management in their expanding global businesses: that their success will not depend on traditional expatriate assignments, but on considering HR management as part of a global strategy.
