Als Beethoven 1809 vom Wiener Burgtheater den Auftrag erhielt, eine Bühnenmusik zu Goethes Trauerspiel "Egmont" zu komponieren, empfand er dies als große Ehre. Der Anreiz dürfte umso stärker gewesen sein, als das Drama um den niederländischen Adligen, der Opfer einer Intrige der spanischen Herrscher wird, von vornherein an mehreren Stellen Musik vorsieht. Beethoven betonte später mehrfach, er habe von der Theaterdirektion kein Honorar erhalten, sondern diese Musik "bloß aus Liebe zum Dichter geschrieben". Schon früh bahnte sich eine Trennung der Ouvertüre von der übrigen Schauspielmusik an; sie erschien separat im Druck und wurde bald als vom Trauerspiel unabhängiges Konzertstück aufgeführt. Sie erscheint nun als Studien-Edition auf der Basis des Notentexts der Beethoven-Gesamtausgabe mit einem neuen Vorwort.
