Als in Frankreich die Revolution noch jung war, zeigte sich Preußen in Lethargie erstarrt. Zu lange hatte man sich auf den Lorbeeren des Alten Fritz ausgeruht. Die Niederlagen gegen Napoleon 1806 markierten dabei den Tiefpunkt. "Deutschland in seiner tiefsten Erniedrigung" titelte ein Traktat aus jener Zeit und traf damit den Nagel auf den Kopf. Die Stein-Hardenberg'schen Reformen, Gneisenau und der "Turnvater" Jahn - sie alle trugen dazu bei, dass die danach reformierte preußische Armee der napoleonischen Vorherrschaft ein Ende bereiten konnte. Dieses Buch, eine Originalausgabe, ist eine der wenigen Dokumentationen über die Armee jener Zeit.
