Valentin Weigel (1533-1588) war einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Denker des Reformationsjahrhunderts. Als Gegner der Intoleranz und der theologischen Konflikte seiner Zeit entwickelte er eine kohärente spiritualistische Theorie, die die Autorität in religiösen Gewissensfragen individualisierte und die Theologie mit der Naturphilosophie in Einklang brachte. Weigel gilt mit Recht als Mystiker, seine Mystik ist allerdings frei von Dünkel und Obskurantismus. Dieser Beitrag fasst das aufgrund der Neuedition ermöglichte Bild eines bedeutenden religiösen Denkers zusammen.
