Das bis vor kurzem verschollene Originalmanuskript, welches mittlerweile in der Bibliothčque musical François-Lang in Royaumont(nördlich von Paris gelegen) zugänglich ist, offenbart viele Details, die bisher übersehen bzw. nicht korrigiert wurden. Daher diente es alsHauptquelle für die hier vorgelegte neue URTEXT-Ausgabe. Als Nebenquellen wurden u. a. die deutsche und die französische Erstausgabevon 1849 herangezogen.Von Interesse für die heutige Aufführungspraxis dürften auch Liszts für die dritte Etüde angefertigte Kadenzeinschübe und die alternativeCoda sein.
