Research on the potential of mammalian stem cells to act as an all-purpose repair system for the body, and the ethical/legal controversies over applications of embryonic and fetal tissue sources are briefly introduced. International contributors to ten chapters present original experimental findings with therapeutic implications. E.g., a research area being explored is stem cells' apparent ability to boost the limited self-repair ability of the adult central nervous system. Scientists also describe a breakthrough method allowing transgene induction in implanted embryonic stem cells. Illustrations include a typical cell aspiration and recovery experiment, and comparisons of the differentiation potential of cell populations. Surprisingly, Koka's affiliation with the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies, San Diego (per the Web) is not stated.
