Sophia Sawyer was born and educated in New Hampshireand Massachusetts. She turned to teaching as ameans of support after the death of her parents, andwas later sent to teach in Tennessee for theAmerican Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions.Sawyer exemplifies the first generation of women toreceive an academy education and become teachersthemselves.
