Durch den Einsatz der ionisierenden Strahlung entstehen verschiedene Arten von DNA-Schäden, u. a. DNA-Doppelstrangbrüche. Diese werden durch zwei verschiedene Methoden, die Homologe Rekombination und das nichthomologe Endjoining, repariert. Bei der Homologen Rekombination, die ausschließlich in der Synthese- sowie G2-Phase stattfinden soll, ist eine Fülle von Reparaturproteinen beteiligt. Ziel war es, die Unterschiede in der Effizienz der Doppelstrangbruchreparatur zwischen normalen Hautfibroblasten und NBS-defizienten Zellen in den verschiedenen Phasen des Zellzyklus aufzuzeigen.
