Il Reggiane RE 2005 fu da molti definito come "il più bel caccia dell'Asse", in tante disquisizioni tecniche che non tralasciavano però l'aspetto estetico. In effetti il Sagittario era un velivolo bellissimo, dalla linea pulita e filante, ma che possedeva soprattutto caratteristiche di volo esuberanti, armamento molto potente ed ottima maneggevolezza. Il caccia per eccellenza quindi, limitato però da rallentamenti nella produzione e da una certa debolezza strutturale nella parte posteriore della fusoliera.
