NMR quantum computing with qubit systems represented bynuclear spins with I=1/2 of small molecules in liquids has led tothe most successful experimental quantum information processors sofar. Weuse the quadrupolar spin-3/2 sodium nuclei of a NaNO3single crystal as a virtual two-qubit system. The large quadrupolarcoupling in comparison with the environmental interactions and theusage of strongly modulating pulses allow us to manipulate thesystem fast enough and at the same time keeping the decoherencereasonably slow. The experimental challenge is to characterize thecalculation behavior of the quantum processor by process tomographywhich is here adapted to the quadrupolar spin system. The resultsof a selection of quantum gates and algorithms are presented aswell as a detailed analysis of the decoherence behavior of ourquantum processor.
