Philipp Otto Runge (1777-1810) war neben Caspar David Friedrich der bedeutendste Künstler der deutschen Romantik. Er suchte nach der paradiesischen Ursprache, durch die auch die Kunst zu erneuern wäre. Neben religiös-metaphysischen Themen widmete er sich in seiner Malerei vor allem dem Portrait und dem Selbstportrait. Daneben verfasste er kunsttheoretische Schriften, die ihn in engen Kontakt mit Goethe brachten. Frank Büttner gibt in diesem Band einen fundierten Überblick über das Leben, die Ideen und die Werke des jung verstorbenen Künstlers.
