Der bekannte Botaniker und Philosoph Ernst Hallier (1831-1904) hat auf dem Gebiet der mikroskopischen Pflanzenpathologie Großes geleis tet. Durch seine jahrzehntelangen Forschungen gelang er schließlich zu der Auffassung, dass pflanzliche Mikroorganismen Ursache für mensch liche Infektionskrankheiten seien. Halliers Hauptgebiet waren die Schma rot zerpilze. Nach seinem Studium in Berlin, Jena und Göttingen war Hallier Schüler von Matthias Jakob Schleiden, bei dem er sich auch habilitierte. Von 1865 bis 1884 war er Professor für Botanik an der Universität Jena. Philosophisch richtete er sich an Jakob Friedrich Fries aus.
