En l'année du centenaire de Proust, une vision essentielle et intempestive de sa vie comme de son œuvre.Roger Duchêne, éditeur de Madame de Sévigné à la Pléiade, biographe à succès chez Fayard (Ninon de Lenclos, Molière, La Fontaine, Madame de Sévigné...) avait publié en 1994 chez Robert Laffont un Impossible Marcel Proust. Cette imposante biographie se distinguait notamment par l'utilisation de la correspondance et des textes de jeunesse pour raconter, avec précision et sans les confondre, l'histoire de la vie et celle des œuvres de l'auteur de la Recherche. Paru dans la collection " Biographies sans masque ", l'ouvrage fut très bien accueilli à sa sortie et ce d'autant plus qu'il avançait sans tabou, s'aventurant sur des chemins peu fréquentés : l'argent, la sexualité, la judaïté.... Cette biographie remarquable, devenue un classique, méritait, en cette " année Proust ", d'être de nouveau disponible, revue et augmentée et dotée d'un titre neuf. Le fils de l'auteur, l'universitaire Hervé Duchêne, signe une longue préface enthousiasmante qui met en valeur ces qualités.
