Composé en 1923, La Conscience de Zeno est sans doute le premier grand roman inspiré par la psychanalyse. Mais il est bien plus que cela. Avec la confession de son héros - narrateur qui entreprend d'évoquer pour le médecin qui le soigne les faits marquants de son existence, il demeure l'un des livres fondateurs de la littérature européenne du xxe siècle. C'est Eugenio Montale, Benjamin Crémieux et Valery Larbaud qui révélèrent et imposèrent simultanément, en France et en Italie, pendant l'hiver 1925-1926, le nom d'Italo Svevo, l'écrivain triestin né en 1861, et qui allait mourir en 1928...
