Gichin Funakoshi č considerato il padre del karate moderno. Negli anni Venti scrisse il primo di numerosi testi sul karate classico, raggiungendo l'apice della carriera con la pubblicazione di Karate-do Kyohan Il Kyohan, tuttavia, derivava da Karate jutsu, un testo risalente a molto tempo prima, nei cui scritti formativi Funakoshi aveva esposto la filosofia e le forme che avrebbe praticato e perfezionato per tutta la vita. In questa edizione il traduttore inglese, John Teramoto, č riuscito a esprimere fedelmente l'essenza del manoscritto originale di Funakoshi e ha contribuito con un'introduzione informativa e note che segnalano i casi in cui le forme Jutsu differiscono da quelle del Kyohan.
