Bruno Hofer (1861 - 1916) zählt zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Ichthyologen und gilt - aufgrund seiner Bemühungen für die Reinerhaltung der Gewässer und der Trinkwasserressourcen - als Vorkämpfer des Umweltschutzes. Hofer studierte Naturwissenschaften in Königsberg und habilitierte sich in München, wo er sein Leben lang tätig bleiben sollte. Ab 1896 lehrte er als Dozent für Fischkunde an der Tierärztlichen Hochschule München. 1898 wurde Hofer zum außerordentlichen Professor für Zoologie und Fischkunde, 1908 zum ordentlichen Professor berufen. Zu den bekanntesten Publikationen Hofers zählen das "Handbuch der Fischkrankheiten" (1904) und "Die Süßwasserfische Mitteleuropas" (1908).
