Die Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin Dorothea Schlegel (1764 1839) war eine der Zentralfiguren der deutschen Romantik. Nach einer gescheiterten ersten Ehe lebte die Tochter des jüdischen Aufklärers Moses Mendelssohn zunächst unverheiratet mit dem Philosophen und Schriftsteller Friedrich Schlegel zusammen. Gemeinsam mit Schlegels Bruder August Wilhelm, dessen Ehefrau sowie Tieck, Schelling und Novalis bildete das Paar in Jena eine der Keimzellen der deutschen Romantik. Friedrich Schlegels berühmter Skandalroman "Lucinde" gilt gemeinhin als Darstellung seiner Beziehung zu Dorothea. Dorothea Schlegel selbst veröffentlichte Literaturkritiken, übersetzte u. a. Texte der Madame de Staël und schrieb mit "Florentin" einen an Goethes "Wilhelm Meister" orientierten Roman. Ihre auf französischen Quellen beruhende Bearbeitung des zum Sagenkreis um König Artus' Tafelrunde gehörenden Merlin-Stoffs erschien zuerst 1804 in Leipzig.
