World Press Photo hat sich seit 1955 von einer §kleinen regionalen Fotoausstellung zum größten §internationalen Wettbewerb für Pressefotografie §entwickelt. Jedes Jahr versammelt die in Amsterdam §ansässige Stiftung eine internationale Jury, um aus §Zehntausenden von Bildeinsendungen das Pressefoto §des Jahres zu wählen. Der Wettbewerb wird so zum §Fokus einer sich stetig globalisierenden §Bildpublizistik. Wie in einem Brennglas laufen hier §unzählige Linien zu einem Punkt zusammen. Das §Siegerbild steht am Ende eines gigantischen §Verdichtungsprozesses, dessen Legitimität immer §wieder zum Gegenstand von Kontroversen wird. Die §vorliegende Studie analysiert, welche Merkmale ein §Bild zum Pressefoto des Jahres machen. Implizit §hinter der Wettbewerbsauswahl stehende §Machtstrukturen werden ebenso hinterfragt wie §normative Direktiven, mit denen sich die Profession §des Pressefotografen konfrontiert sieht. Dabei §werden auch historische Entwicklungslinien der §journalistischen Fotografie nachgezeichnet. Auf §diese Weise lässt sich aufzeigen, wessen und welche §Wirklichkeit im Fokus der von World Press Photo §verbreiteten Fotos entsteht.
