Als der 45jährige Wolfgang Koeppen 1951 seinen Roman Tauben im Gras veröffentlichte, der ihm bis heute Ruhm und Anerkennung einträgt das Buch ist als erster Band der von Hans-Ulrich Treichel herausgegebenen Werke im Herbst 2006 erschienen , zählte er zu den unbekannten jungen Autoren. Das "Dritte Reich" hatte verhindert, daß Koeppen nach seinem Debüt (da war er wirklich jung, 28 Jahre alt) Eine unglückliche Liebe aus dem Jahr 1934 sich ein Werk erschreiben konnte. Jörg Döring beschreibt im Kommentar zu Band 1 der Werke die Entstehung des Buches, seine autobiographischen§Wurzeln, die erstaunlich große und positive Resonanz zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung und die Aufnahme nach 1945 sowie die Stellung des Buches im uvre des Autors.
