Die Geschichte der Sozialpsychologie der DDR ist eng mit den Namen Hans Hiebsch (1922-1990) und Manfred Vorwerg (1933-1989) verbunden, die als die Begründer der marxistischen Sozialpsychologie gelten. Ferner ist die Sozialpsychologie der DDR mit dem Institut für Psychologie eng verknüpft, war sie doch in Form eines Ausbildungs- und Forschungszentrums von 1962-1989 dort institutionalisiert. Darüber hinaus war die marxistische Sozialpsychologie von Hiebsch und Vorwerg auf das engste mit dem Staat DDR verflochten, denn sie wurde in ihm entwickelt und verschwand mit ihm. In dieser Arbeit wird die wissenschaftshistorische Entwicklung dieser psychologischen Teildisziplin unter Berücksichtigung der genannten Verflechtungen dargestellt.
