Der Pfarrer, Gymnasiallehrer und Schriftsteller Gustav Schwab (1792-1850) ist heute vor allem für seinen immer wieder aufgelegten Jugendbuchklassiker "Die schönsten Sagen des klassischen Altertums" bekannt. Daneben hat Schwab, der zusammen mit Mörike, Varnhagen von Ense und Wilhelm Hauff zur Schwäbischen Dichterschule gerechnet wird, Reisebücher verfasst und vor allem Volkserzählungen seiner südwestdeutsche Heimat gesammelt, die er in zahlreichen Nacherzählungsbänden veröffentlicht. Der vorliegende Band enthält einige seiner bekanntesten Sagen, darunter "Die schöne Melusine", "Genoveva" und "Die schöne Magelone".
