Lou Andreas-Salomé (1861-1937) kam das erste Mal mit der Psychoanalyse in Berührung, als sie auf einer Schwedenreise mit dem Nervenarzt und Freudianer Poul Bjerre eine Liebesbeziehung begann. In diese Zeit fällt auch die Abfassung des Essays "Die Erotik". 1911 begleitete sie Bjerre zum Kongress der Internationalen Psychoanalytischen Vereinigung in Weimar, wo sie Sigmund Freud traf, der sich von Lou Andreas-Salomé tief beeindruckt zeigte. Freud bildete die Autorin zur Psychoanalytikerin aus und bezeichnete sie später angesichts ihrer eher literarisch-poetischen denn streng wissenschaftlichen Vorgehensweise als die "Dichterin der Psychoanalyse".
