Alexandre Dumas der Jüngere (1825-1895) war der uneheliche Sohn von Alexandre Dumas, dem Autor des "Grafen von Monte Christo" und der "Drei Musketiere". Mit dem 1848 veröffentlichten Roman "Die Dame mit den Kamelien", die Geschichte einer früh an Schwindsucht gestorbenen Pariser Kurtisane, feierte Alexandre Dumas der Jüngere seinen größten Erfolg, dem er vier Jahre später eine nicht minder erfolgreiche Bühnenversion folgen ließ. Verdi diente das Stück als Vorlage für seine 1853 uraufgeführte Oper "La Traviata".
