Im Zentrum der Untersuchung stehen Fragen nach den je spezifischen Konditionen der Auswahl und Aufnahme geeigneter Kandidaten sowie den verschiedenen Instrumentarien zur Unterweisung und Integration des Nachwuchses. Am Beispiel von Cluniazensern, Cisterziensern und Franziskanern wird dabei sowohl versucht, einen historischen Überblick der Probezeiten in den genannten Gemeinschaften zu gewinnen als auch den Begriff des Noviziates neu zu akzentuieren.
