Dance in the Field is the first international collection designed to juxtapose major approaches to the ethnographic study of dance and movement. Drawing on theoretical perspectives principally from anthropology, ethnology, ethnomusicology and folklore studies, the specially commissioned articles reflect the extensive field research of its contributors and the current state of scholarship in this fast-developing area. In particular, the volume brings to wider attention the traditions of dance scholarship from central and eastern Europe, alongside those of Britain and North America. In discussing dance practices from Europe, North America, Polynesia, Tonga, Indonesia, Asia, Africa and Australia, the authors engage with questions of theoretical orientation, methods of documentation, politics, ethics and epistemological concerns related to studying dance in the field. This exciting collection is a newly significant addition to dance scholarship and underlines the cross-disciplinary contributions which dance and movement scholars can make to current debates on ethnography.
