Originally a small hamlet at the Mersey estuary, Bootle underwent great development in the nineteenth century as a bathing resort for wealthy Liverpool residents. This growth was particularly encouraged by the arrival of the Liverpool, Crosby & Southport Railway in the 1840s, which brought visitors and new residents to the area. The construction of Bootle Docks encouraged industrial development, and by the early twentieth century Bootle was a bustling suburb of Liverpool. Despite heavy bombing during the Second World War, Bootle has retained much evidence of its rich heritage. Many examples of Victorian architecture and grand open spaces remain, alongside areas of regeneration and rebuilding. As one of the two main administrative areas of Sefton, Bootle continues to evolve into an increasingly attractive destination. Join author Hugh Hollinghurst in a pictorial tour of old and new Bootle, showcasing the area's many points of interest.
