This book examines a topical phenomenon from a previously neglected perspective by bringing together multidisciplinary insights from the field of humanities into human-nature relations. So far, the changes in biodiversity have been mainly studied by natural scientists. We approach the human relationship with the changing biodiversity from three different angles: 1) Belonging and non-belonging, 2) Emotions and 3) Environmental Policy. The question of belonging and non-belonging is crucial when it comes to changing biodiversity. We ask who decides where species can move and live and when invasive becomes native. Similarly, emotions have a big role in human-nature relations. Our book shows why we grieve the loss of some species and hate some other species, and how our emotions change over time. We also aim to show how environmental policies, or governing species, are affected by societal discussion, emotions, scientific research, and topical concepts and how these policies shape biodiversity and our perceptions of different species. Altogether, our book expands our current understanding of the relationship between humans and nature and adds historical and cultural depth to the debate on environmental problems such as species loss.
