König Alfons X. von Spanien (1221 - 1284), der aufgrund seiner zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Projekte auch "der Weise" genannt wird, ließ gegen Ende seines Lebens auch ein Buch über Brett- und Würfelspiele anfertigen. Die Vollendung dieses prachtvollen, mit vielen farbigen Illustrationen ausgestatteten Manuskripts erlebte er nicht mehr. Für Alfons waren Spiele mehr als nur bloßer Zeitvertreib: Sie symbolisierten die Natur des Menschen und der Welt, in der er lebt. Deshalb stellt sein Spielebuch eine der bedeutendsten Quellen zur Kulturgeschichte der Spiele überhaupt dar. Erstmals werden in diesem Werk Schach, Würfelspiele, Tricktrackspiele, Mühle und andere Spiele in einer europäischen Sprache beschrieben.
