"Adhesion of Cells, Viruses and Nanoparticles" aims to address the chemistry of adhesion between cells, viruses and proteins. Until now this topic has been discussed in terms of biochemistry or in terms of adhesive molecules. The new approach presented here aims to describe cell adhesion in terms of van der Waals forces acting between deformable particles of known elastic, geometric and surface properties. §The first part of the book defines the theory in fundamental terms at undergraduate level, demonstrating the validity of the arguments by experiments on polymers and other synthetic materials. The later sections go on to apply the theory to particles of biological origin, especially where Brownian motion is observed. Measurement methods are explained and defined. Finally the book deals with the latest research results on the chemistry of biological systems and living particles.
