The lectures were inaugurated in 1692 by Richard Bentley, a renowned scholar who corresponded with Newton during their preparation. These lectures were written to give evidence of the existence of God to philosophers and scientists as well as lay people, and as such provide arguments of varied interest to a modern audience. The collection culminates in an exposition of Newton's natural philosophy designed to explicate the theological position outlined in the earlier lectures. They are thus the first popular presentation of the discoveries otherwise inaccessibly presented in Newton's Principia of 1687.
