Orlando di Lassos zwölfteiliger Motettenzyklus Prophetiae Sibyllarum aus den 1550er Jahren gehört zu den faszinierendsten Werken der Spätrenaissance. Als Grundlage dienten zwölf antike Texte, die als vorchristliche Prophezeiungen der sogenannten Sibyllen ausgelegt wurden, welche angeblich die Geburt Christi verkündet haben sollen. Lasso vertonte sie in einem extrem chromatischen Stil, der in seiner harmonischen Kühnheit stark an die Madrigale Gesualdos erinnert. Der Zyklus entstand für die Privatsammlung seines Dienstherrn Herzog Albrecht V. von Bayern und ist ein besonders eindrucksvolles Beispiel für musica reservata der Renaissance.
